A Short Story Brought on by Insomnia

Why do we sleep at night? Most people will tell it's so that our bodies can recover from the day's activities, so that our minds can sort through everything from the day.

But they're wrong.

Have you ever wondered why dogs bark at shadows at night?

Sure, sometimes they're barking at stray cats, possums, would be burglars etc etc. but most of the time they're reacting to the strange goings on around them.

Night is a time of strange things. A time when inter dimensional travelling bunnies visit Earth and take notes and further their plans of their future invasion.

A time when, if you look closely enough, holes in the fabric of time open up, and we can witness history taking place around us. Some people who witness this believe they have seen a ghost or ghosts. This is because most of the time the hole in the fabric of time is small and weak, and colour cannot easily pass through it.

Sometimes a hole in space and time open up, and it is possible for a person to see a completely different world. But this is rare, and people will usually just believe it is a dream.

Night is a time when the insects build civilisations, only to have a new one takes its place. Daylight burns these civilisations, and the insects retreat back and hope that night will again fall so that they can start rebuilding again.

The inter dimensional travelling bunnies have noted this. They spend a lot of time watching the rise and fall of countless insect civilisations, trying to work out a way to use it to their advantage.

Night is a time when things so bizarre that our minds can't handle it happen. That is why, long ago, our ancestors made a pact with a powerful being so that we would sleep at night and the bizarre things would go on unnoticed by us.

That was long ago, the pact long forgotten.

Ghosts in the House

So last night was pretty windy, which meant that there was all kinds of things going bang and thud in the dark.

At first these sounds didn't worry me too much: it's usual for an old, run down house to make sounds like that. Although it did occur to me that Charlotte and Horry might be adding to the noise as well. But since they're both so incompetent at the whole haunting thing, the presense of the ghosts last night didn't worry me.

That is until I heard Charlotte chuckle.

Suddenly Charlotte became a lot less incompetent and a whole lot more threatening. If she managed to chuckle in such a sinister way, who knows what else she's capable of.

My first instinct when I heard Charlotte's chuckle was to leap out of bed and barricade my door.

The only reason why I didn't was because it was too cold to actually get out of bed. Plus I'm sure that I would've drawn attention to myself with all of the noise I would've made barricading my door. Better to remain still and quiet and hope that Charlotte just passes by without doing anything undue.

And then it occurred to me that barricading my door against a ghost is a pretty futile act. It's not like that's going to stop a ghost from just drifting through my wall or door.

My Day 21/09/11

I must admit that last night things weren't boding well for me; I was facing a day of limping around, trying not to make my blisters worse and the fact that I ate under cooked chicken for dinner (and I still resisted the urge to throw up when I realised this. Apparently risking food poisoning during a job interview is more preferable). Plus the fact that the job I was going for required me to have a passport.

But it turns out that all that worrying last night was pointless; I got band aides and wore thick socks, and eating the under cooked chicken didn't have any ill effects on me. I didn't magically get a passport over night. The power of wishful thinking really isn't that great. Wish it was, though.

Not that it matters now.

I didn't get the job with MAM/Qantas.

I don't actually know what they were looking for. I was bright and bubbly and put myself out of my comfort zone ... actually not really. For that to be really true I would've been a conversation starter. Not a conversation joiner, which is super eay to do in the group interview setting. Although, I did volunteer to be the group speaker for one of the activities. I never do that. I sit back and let someone else volunteer. So I did put myself out of my comfort zone!

The only thing that really could've brought me down was my humour. I think it may have been a little too dark (and possibly sadistic) for what they were looking for in potential cabin crew members.

But the people I was having lunch with when I got the "Go home. We don't want you message" all got the same message and a couple of them were in one of my groups at one time or another, and they all showed bright, bubbly, outgoing personalities that all good cabin crew members should have without any signs of dark humour.

I'd say our written responses let us down. But we all got the messages too soon after being let out to lunch for the written responses to have been read.

So that meant I got to head home a few hours earlier than planned (no walking home from the station in the dark for me!). That meant that Vline disrupted my musings as I tried to figure out where I went wrong in the interview.

Honestly I don't know what the Vline employees were seeing! Whatever they were seeing wasn't visible to us lowly, unSighted passengers, which made their constant nagging announcements about not boarding the train until instructed when no one could be seen trying to do just that annoying and confusing.

I can only conclude that part of the job requirement for Vline is to have the Sight so that those sneaky ghosts and apparitions can't sneak on board and avoid paying for a ticket.

I guess that's why there's a gnome who drank too much Skele-Gro has a child working for Vline.

New Trick?

For the last couple of nights I have been hearing a disembodied meowing coming from under the house. Even though I thought it might have all been in my head, I was still running around looking for the damn thing.

Well, actually, just making sure that all of the cats were still inside last night. It was too cold to actually go outside and get under the house. Plus there's the whole spiders under the house factor, which I really have no desire to face. Especially in the middle of the night!

And since all of the cats were inside the house, I had to content myself with the fact that I was either imagining the meowing, or that it was one of the cats being all sneaky and throwing his/her voice.

Except this evening I got confirmation that it was neither of those!

My housemate and I were watching TV and we both heard the meowing. So did one of the cats, and I don't think she's quite that good at throwing her voice.

So there must be a cat under the house!

A cat that only meows when no one else is around.

And only at night.

Maybe it's not a cat under there, after all. Maybe it's Horry and/or Charlotte having another go at haunting the house.

By pretending to be a cat stuck under the house at night.

Although, it did have me running around looking for it last night, and I was half convinced that it was all in my head. So maybe the ghost in question is onto something with this latest haunting scheme.

Very sneaky if it is Horry and/or Charlotte.

Ghosts & the Can Opener

While I was once again struggling to properly open a can with one of the numerous can openers in the house, I couldn't help wondering why the hell none of the numerous bloody things in this house can never open a can properly.

Trying to pry open a can that wasn't opened properly is how I almost sliced the pad of my right index finger off. So naturally, I'm put out more than ever now by the sketchy opening job the can openers always do when a can is trying to be opened.

I've never had this problem with can openers before ... except with blunt ones, but they don't really count as can openers, do they?

And most of the can openers in this house are almost brand spankin' new! So there's no reason why they shouldn't be opening cans cleanly and properly.

The only logical conclusion why the can openers aren't doing their job properly?

Horry and/or Charlotte!

One or both of those ghosts are possessing the can openers when they're being used, and ensuring that the cans aren't opened properly.

And this whole time I thought that they were ineffective as ghosts!

Sure, the whole possessing the can openers things is weird and unheard of as far as hauntings go. Also not all that scary to begin with. But it does get the job done for them; we're hugely put out, and run the risk of seriously injuring ourselves trying to open the cans with our bare hands (and suddenly the whole can opener haunting thing seems a whole lot scarier than it did a few seconds ago). Plus, because of how unusual it is, it's less likely to draw attention to their devious little plot.

Pretty tricky of Horry and/or Charlotte! But I caught on to them in the end. Now I've just got to figure out how to put a stop to these actions. A circle of salt around each can opener should do the trick ... unless there's already a ghost in the can opener! Then I'll just be trapping the damn thing in there.

This is going to require more thouhgt ... and possibly the continuation of watching Supernatural to get some ideas on how to deal with ghosts.

Beanbag Beans

The other day some bloody genious let out all of the beanbag beans from the beanbag, and ever since then it's been a constant battle to rid the house of the bloody things. Vacuming the house daily doesn't seem to make a difference; they reappear almost immediately afterwards.

The house hasn't been vacummed in a couple of days, so it's getting over run by the accursed beenbag beans at the moment. They're even in the shower!

But it's not the overwhelming amount of beanbag beans that has got me all worried and concerned; keeping their numbers down is easy enough, and there's only a finite amount of them in the house. So the battle against them will some day end.

What has me concerned is the fact that I just watched one roll across the lounge room floor of its own accord. All of the doors and windows are shut, and the carpet is covering the massive gap between two of the floor boards, so there's no obvious source of wind to propel this one beanbag bean across the floor.

This suggests to a couple of possibilities;

One, Horry and/ Charlotte have re-emerged with the idea that it's been too long since they've haunted this house ... once again, showing weak haunting abilities.

Or two, that beanbag bean is possessed and is recruiting more beanbag bean mates to build an army of beanbag beans to attack us in retaliation for being vacummed.

Either way, I'm concerned about the possible outcome. Especially since I've now lost sight of the moving beanbag bean.

Cats and Ghosts

So normally I'm pretty cool with the fact that I live in a haunted house. Horry (the resident ghost for those of you who don't know) really isn't all that bad. More annoying than anything.

And certainly not all that effective as a ghost.

Until recently.

Apparently while I was away this weekend, the hauntings in this house stepped up and become a little more real and scary.

And then the Blinky Bill VHS turned up today with the name Charlotte scrawled across the cover in permanent marker. Our general agreement is that that name hasn't always been there. That it's only just been written on there.

So now we have two ghosts ... either that, or Horry is a transvestite, and is a more effective ghost when dressed up as Charlotte.

But this still didn't really disturb me; apart from being a little surprised by the sudden appearance of Charlotte's name on the Blinky Bill VHS, none of this didn't really effect me.

Until tonight.

Yeah, now I have my own effective ghost story ... and the cats totally proved that there was definitely something else besides me and them in the room;

I was watching TV, alone (since everyone else is in bed), and the floor boards behind me creaked like someone was walking.

Sure, sure, it's an old house and these kinds of sounds are to be expected as the house "settles" at night.

But that theory got thrown out the window when both Josie and Leo both reacted as though there was another person in the room with us. I don't know what it was, since I couldn't see it. But they could both see whatever it was that was walking around behind me. They both stared at it, and Leo even warily went up to investigate it closer.

Pretty sure that a "settling" house wouldn't have two cats acting as though there was another person in the room.

Really just hope that the haunting events don't get any more serious than this, though.

Our House; The Haunted House

Yeah, so I'm beginning to get worried about this house. It's getting a little hinky here, I think. The two or more ghosts haunting the place are seeing to that.

I just don't know how long it has been haunted.

Weird things were happening here before I moved in. Those same weird things also stopped just before I moved in. Nothing weird happened again here until after Halloween 2008.

Our 2008 Halloween party included an excursion to the old Ballarat cemetary, where a very drunk attempt at calling up the dead took place. Since nothing actually happened, we poured some punch onto the grave as an apology for disturbing the deseased's peace.

Our peace offering wasn't accepted. Maybe we should've used something better than the very strong Res style punch we were drinking at the time.

But after the 2008 Halloween party weird things started happening in the house again. Nothing concerning. Just the TV or radio just randomly turning on in the middle of the night, and a door occassionally opening or closing for no apparent reason.

Pretty average stuff. Nothing that spooked us. But these events did make us aware that Horry had followed us home from the cemetary.

We've been ignoring his attempts to spook us since then. He's been about effect at that as the ghost in the toilet was until Pete Twist gave him a pep talk.

But now it seems that Horry is stepping up in the world of haunting; he can now flush the downstairs toilet ... don't know why he doesn't flush the upstairs one instead, though. However, this is more of an annoyance than spooky. It costs us money every time he flushes. Not to mention the water he's wasting.

Although the random downstairs toilet flushing can be ignored. What is really giving me cause for concern is that Horry seems to have brought back a few of his wee lil' ghostie mates with him from wherever he's learning to be a more effective ghost.

At first I thought I was imagining these spectres. I seem to be the only one noticing them, if the complete lack of my housemates saying anything about seeing them is anything to go by.

But then Tomas saw something. I don't think he's quite aware of what he saw, since he thought it was his cat Shego, until I pointed out that she was behind him, and not in my bedroom.

Yeah, the latest ghost sighting is in my room. So unbelievably not cool.

Last night, I kept seeing the top of the head of something pacing beside my bed under the window. Since I was half asleep whenever I saw it, I told myself that it was a sleep muddled figment of my imagination, and that was that.

Then, this morning Tomas was trying to get Shego out of my room. He apparently saw her moving in there, and told her so. Just after he said that, Shego emerged from under the couch in the lounge room.

So I have no idea what he saw in my room. Probably the same thing I was watching last night.

Needless to say, I have some concerns about going to sleep in there tonight now.

The Mystery of the Escaping Dogs

So our dogs have an amazing Houdini like ability to escape from the back yard.

Sure, parts of the fence are dodgy and easy for anything smaller than a cow to get through. But that stretch of the fence has been completely sectioned off from them, and the rest of the fence has been lined with bricks so that they can't dig under it.

That worked.

Kind of.

It at least stopped them getting out during the day.

Except now they get at at night. Only at night.

It's because that they were only getting out at night that at first we were inclined to believe that some local neighbourhood shits were letting them out through the gate. Probably just for laughs (losers).

So naturally, we chained and locked the gates so that this wouldn't happen anymore.

It didn't help.

As soon as it got dark, the dogs were magically out of the yard.

The others were still inclined to blame the local neighbourhood shits ... after a couple more extensive searches of the backyard to locate any holes that may have been missed the first few times around (there weren't any).

So the local neighbourhood shits were the likely culprit.

However, I don't believe it's them.

There's another explanation. And it's much more likely than the local neighbourhood shits looking for laughs.

It has to be Horry.

I should probably explain who Horry is for this to make sense.

Horry is the ghost that haunts our house. He has been haunting our house since Halloween 2009. Apparently we pissed him off when we went to the cemetary and tried doing a seonce (his grave was one of a few just chosen at random). To encourage him to show himself to us, we offered him some punch (I don't really blame him for getting pissed at us; it was horrible punch). When that didn't work, we gave him some more punch to try and appease him for disturbing his rest.

It didn't work, and now we have Horry's angry spirit haunting us.

And it would seem that he gets his kicks by letting the dogs out of the yard at night. Maybe he's hoping that they'll get hit by a car or something.

But it's the only thing that really explains how the dogs are only getting out when it's dark.

I'm not really a great ghost buff, but I'm pretty certain that ghosts are stronger at night, which makes sense, since it probably requires a bit of effort to magically (or ghostically) move them from one side of the fence to the other. Horry probably can't do that sort of thing during the day. Plus, it might give his little game away if he does it during the day and gets spotted.

And if it was local neighbourhood shits letting the dogs out, they would probably unchain the dogs and then run. Or at least leave the gate open and/or just starting taunting the dogs in some way or form.

Horry, however, doesn't do anything (as far as I can tell) to the dogs while they're tied up ... although it might explain why Back-up sometimes starts carrying on for no reason at night.
